The Mid-East Commission Planning, Economic Development, and Community Services Department, located in Washington, North Carolina serving a five county region, is seeking a qualified individual with education and experience in the areas of, Land Use Planning, Zoning Administration, Transportation Planning and Water Quality Planning, to fill the position of Planner. The Planner position, under the supervision of the Department Director, performs professional planning work for the COG. Work primarily includes conducting planning, zoning, land use, open space, water quality and assistance to the COG members, as well as coordination of Rural Transportation Planning Organizations (RPO). Work requires thorough knowledge of the planning field and is characterized by independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties. Work is performed primarily in an inside environment. The employee may serve as a lead worker or project manager. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Director of Planning, Economic Development and Community Services and is evaluated through conferences, observation, reports, progress on projects, and feedback from the clients.

The Director of Regional Policy is responsible for developing, maintaining and coordinating a program of regional policy analysis for the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, with a particular focus on the intersection of transportation policy and other regional planning issues, such as land use, economic development, environmental management, and housing. This position brings together the work of several of the institute’s past programs (including its former Center for Transportation Policy Studies, the Land Use and Environmental Planning Division, and its Economic Research unit) to a create a new unit addressing the interconnectivity of regional planning issues for the greater Charlotte region.

An employee in this class performs research and background work for the implementation of the City’s adopted long-range plans, provides demographic and socio-economic data to the public,
facilitates the realization of planning projects and goals, revises plans as-needed to maintain their relevance, and assists the Director with drafting design and zoning standards that will implement
planning goals and objectives. Work includes public meeting facilitation and involves giving information, answering inquiries, and serving as primary staff for the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. The employee will also be expected to work on small area plans that realize the City’s land use, transportation, and comprehensive planning goals, as specified in its adopted plans. Work requires the performance of technical support duties such as
doing research work for any planning project for the City. Work on nights and weekends will periodically be required. Work is supervised by the Development Director and is evaluated
through conferences, review of assigned projects, and overall completion of assigned tasks.

Under the guidance and supervision of staff, Student Fellows will develop revitalization plans for distressed buildings, neighborhoods, or targeted redevelopment sites from work that includes touring
local projects; meeting stakeholders; conducting market research; researching and performing due diligence on projects; developing strategies, plans, pro formas; researching best practices; writing blog
posts and preparing presentations. Fellows may have the opportunity to present findings to local officials, faculty, staff, private developers and other stakeholders. Some in-state travel will be required with possible occasional overnight trips.

ACLS is pleased to announce the tenth annual competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. The program promotes the visibility and value of the humanities PhD beyond the academy by offering opportunities for PhDs to contribute to the public good while gaining career-building experience in the fields of policy, community development, conservation, arts and culture, and media. This initiative is made possible through the support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

In 2020, the program is offering 21 two-year term positions at organizations in government and nonprofit sectors for recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and will have opportunities for networking, mentoring, and career development programming, both in-person and virtually. Fellows receive a stipend of $70,000 per year and have access to employer-based health insurance through the host organization. In addition, ACLS provides funds for relocation and professional development.

The Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is recruiting for the position of Research Associate (RA). The Department conducts innovative analysis and research on a variety of topics, including regional, macroeconomics, monetary policy, labor, and international. The Department has an opening for an RA to start in late-spring to mid-summer 2020.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone considering a Ph.D. in economics with an interest in regional economics, including key Tenth District industries such as agriculture and energy. We are seeking team oriented, energetic, curious, and dedicated candidates pursuing a Master’s degree (or higher) for a position as a
summer intern. The position is available for 10-12 weeks during the summer of 2020. Students graduating in Spring 2020 or recent graduates are preferred, but all are encouraged to apply.

As a summer intern you will play a critical role in a variety of our active projects, conducting spatial and quantitative analyses as well as developing new methodologies and tools that can be implemented in our projects across the world. Candidates should be passionate about analytics and design, and have interdisciplinary research interests that include land use, transportation, infrastructure, environment, and development. Experience with quantitative analysis of demographic data and socio-economic indicators is also critical for successful candidates.
