Self-Help is seeking an intern to join our Real Estate Team’s project management group in Durham for summer 2022. The RE Development Intern will be responsible for supporting a project manager in ongoing real estate development activities, research and other support tasks, and new project predevelopment efforts. This internship will be particularly well suited for a positive, motivated, and well-organized person with an interest (but not necessarily experience) in community real estate development. The summer internship will begin in late May 2022 and will be based in our Durham, NC office (Covid-19 conditions permitting).

The selected candidates will lead interdisciplinary teams, including staff, consultants, and agency partners, in the development of comprehensive master and sector plans, planning studies, and comprehensive zoning map amendments. This work involves managing community outreach and engagement, interagency coordination, and communication of complex and sensitive information to multiple audiences to complete assigned duties.

The focus of this internship is to support the ongoing Scenario Planning for Equitable Revitalization and Climate Resilience project that is co-led by the Reduced Poverty and Spatial Inequality and the Low-Carbon, Climate-Resilient Communities and Regions teams. The project involves engaging with at least one small to midsize city with a declining or stagnant population to pilot a recently developed scenario planning framework for smaller Legacy Cities. The scenario planning process will be focused on equitable, climate resilient revitalization. This is a part-time position up to 15 hours/week that reports to the Director of Climate Strategies. TJCOG is seeking an intern to assist with various projects related to the American Rescue Plan (ARP). The selected candidate will work under the guidance of the Data Strategy Coordinator, on projects to support the memberships’ administration and expenditure of funds from the American Rescue Plan.

Additional projects could include:
• Developing a database of projects funded by TJCOG members through the American Rescue Plan
• Producing user guides and other support materials related to particular aspects of the American Rescue Plan funding
• Other American Rescue Plan-related projects agreed upon by the candidate and the League.

Internship Learning objectives:
Depending on the nature of the project, the selected candidate will gain experience in skills such as data collection, data analysis, policy research, memo writing, and project management.
This internship is in partnership with the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) who is also hosting an ARP internship. Interns from both organizations will have the opportunity to collaborate and as appropriate have an opportunity to attend meetings as a representative of TJCOG and interact with local staff and elected officials as a way of gaining familiarity with municipal government.

Required Skills:
This internship would be most appropriate for those currently enrolled in or having recently completed a graduate program in the subject area of: data science, public policy, public administration, urban planning or similar. Experience with data analysis using the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, is required. Ability to self-motivate and manage own working hours is required. PowerBI and GIS experience preferred. Experience working with elected and/or appointed government officials is a plus.

Schedule: 15-20 hours per week, with ability to complete majority of hours remotely.

The Environmental Finance Center (EFC) at UNC’s School of Government is dedicated to enhancing the

several data projects, including developing tools that can allow water and wastewater utilities to provide
affordable services and make the necessary improvements needed so that clean water can be
distributed throughout their communities. The student will also be expected to conduct applied
research on EFC projections relating to affordability, regionalization, integrated planning of wastewater
and stormwater management, and environmental justice in environmental finance.
