Housed within the Consolidated Government of Columbus, the C-PCMPO serves the transportation needs of counties in both Georgia and Alabama. This position offers the opportunity to work on transportation issues such as the development of alternative transportation needs, intermodal programs, and infrastructure improvement. What You Will Do
We are looking for someone who possesses a broad range of planning experiences along with excellent public speaking, research and community engagement skills. Specific skills include:
• Collecting, compiling, and analyzing socio-economic data and statistics for use in technical studies or reports.
• Updating comprehensive short-term and long-range plans
• Conducting studies to assess site impact and forecast traveling trends
• Help develop the Transportation Improvement Program for scheduled infrastructure improvement of streets, highways, bikeways, walkways, public transportation, and airport development;
• Apply for and administers associated state and federal grants.
• Perform travel time studies in the maintenance of the Congestion Management Plan.
• Maintain and update census and demographic information.
• Act as the Bicycle Program Manager for the city in the coordination of all related bicycle activities for the community

What You’ll Need
• Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Transportation, Public Administration, Geography, or a related field is required.
• A Master’s Degree in one of these fields with one to two years of progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job would be great.
• Understanding of the principles and practices of socio-economic forecasting and analysis.
• Experience of the principles and practices of transportation modeling.
• Comprehension of the geography of the city and other local areas.
• Knowledge of the tools and methods associated with the Geographic Information System. Knowledge of accepted planning practices and procedures.
• Skill in problem-solving and decision-making. Skill in operating standard office equipment. Skill in oral and written communication.

Successful candidates will have seven (7) or more years of professional planning experience, including three (3) years supervisory experience, and a Bachelor’s Degree in urban/regional planning, transportation engineering, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ideal candidates will:

-Have experience planning and implementing premium transit systems;
-Have experience planning and implementing pedestrian and bicycle facilities;
-Be familiar with Complete Streets, Vision Zero, & Safe Routes to School initiatives;
-Have knowledge of Federal and State funding programs and regulations;
-Have knowledge of Florida Design standards for state and local roadways;
-Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information in readily understandable plans and reports;
-Be skillful using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite;
-Possess a related graduate degree and/or AICP certification;
-Be committed to effective working relationships with people of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds without discrimination; and
-Have experience working with a Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Ability to work across agencies and the ability to explain complex transportation issues in a clear and concise manner is essential.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in planning, transportation systems, geography, or related field and three years of experience. Preference will be given to applicants have experience working with transportation agencies or community planning organizations.

  • Proficiency in utilizing software/tools for transportation analyses (such as ArcGIS, Cube Voyager, and STOPS modeling platforms) and an interest in advancing new tools/approaches.
  • Proficiency in writing compelling content in multimedia formats that clarify key findings and include adequate technical depth.
    Adept at synthesizing complex technical information into clear, engaging presentations for a wide range of audiences.

Training and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Engineering, Public Policy, or relevant field required. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation or community planning is required.
  • Certification or licensure in related fields (AICP, CTP, PTP, and/or PE) preferred.

Bike Durham is seeking to contract with an individual to coordinate community outreach activities for a safe streets project in the Burch Avenue neighborhood this summer. We project that the work will be an estimated 150 hours (15-20 hours per week), beginning as soon as possible and completed by September 1.
