Description

NC IDEA is a private foundation whose mission is to empower North Carolinians to reach their full entrepreneurial potential. We accomplish this mission through grants and mentorship programs for startup founders, and through grants to organizations around the state who help entrepreneurs.

Our historical focus has been high-tech, venture backable startups, which meant we worked mostly with companies based in the Research Triangle Park. In 2018, we committed to broaden our reach and intentionally grow our support of under-represented, under-served, and under-resourced entrepreneurs, particularly those in economically distressed counties in North Carolina.

One way we want to do this is to provide internship opportunities for under-represented students with the goal of helping to create a more diverse group of future entrepreneurs.

About the Internship

This paid internship will provide a fantastic experience with an organization at the center of North Carolina’s startup ecosystem. You will learn about startups and the organizations across North Carolina that support startups. The specific projects that you will work on will depend on our needs in the summer and your skills and background. Past NC IDEA interns have worked on:

Projects that support the work of NC IDEA:

  • Researching, updating and analyzing data about the North Carolina entrepreneurial ecosystem and startups around the state
  • Improving and updating our website and social media content, including case studies on the companies that receive our grants
  • Assisting in the execution of our programs and seminars

Projects that support one or more of our grantee companies such as:

  • Market research or competitive analysis
  • Web and social media content
  • Other research activities

Key characteristics that we seek are:

  • First and foremost, we are looking for undergraduate or graduate students with a keen interest in startups and entrepreneurship, no matter what your major, as demonstrated by having taken an introduction to entrepreneurship class, started a business, worked at a startup, or some other specific way
  • Skill or interest in one of the many areas that could be useful to NC IDEA or one of our startups
  • A desire, following graduation, to become involved in a startup company or organization supporting startups in North Carolina
  • You must identify as a female, person of color, or reside in a hometown in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 economically distressed county of North Carolina. Representing more than one of these criteria is a plus.

EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Public Health Environmental Assessment (CPHEA), Health & Environmental Effects Assessment Division, Integrated Environmental Assessment Branch (IEAB) in collaboration with EPA Region 10 and ORD’s Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER).

The appointment will be served in either Washington, D.C., Cincinnati, OH, Seattle, WA, or Anchorage, AK.

Research Project: CPHEA is responsible for environmental assessments that inform regulatory offices of the EPA, regions, states, and authorized tribes. CPHEA is collaborating with EPA Region 10 and ORD’s Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) to assess health risks from soil, sediment, and water contamination related to disposal sites near Alaskan federally recognized Tribes. Solid waste practices employed by rural Alaskan tribal governments may be contributing to human and environmental health impacts, which may be exacerbated with the loss of permafrost and increased erosion. In some communities, human waste, household hazardous waste, and electronic waste are co-mingled with typical solid waste in Class III landfills (also commonly referred to as open dumps). The co-mingling of wastes may be causing the transport of contaminants into land and water resources.

Throughout the course of this project, the research participant will engage in scoping and problem formulation, stakeholder engagement processes, conceptual model development, literature reviews, evidence table development, and research gap analysis using a variety approaches (e.g., methods from human and ecological risk assessment, causal assessment, systematic review, human-centered design (HCD), translational science research, and social science) to assess important environmental and exposure pathways relevant to Alaskan Tribes. Projects will be conducted in collaboration with EPA Region 10, Alaskan Tribes and other stakeholders.

Under the guidance of a mentor, participant research training activities may include:

  • Developing scoping and problem formulation documents
  • Conducting stakeholder engagement processes
  • Developing conceptual models
  • Conducting literature, data, and other information searches and screening, including applying systematic review approaches and methods
  • Developing evidence tables using weight of evidence approaches
  • Applying HCD and other social science principles to design stakeholder engagements, gather feedback, and conduct prioritization exercises
  • Preparing presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and reports

The research participant will also assist with outreach and reviewing draft educational materials.

Learning Objectives: The research participant will benefit by learning and implementing risk or causal assessment methods, weight of evidence approaches, HCD and social science approaches to inform Alaskan Tribes on contaminant movement and potential human exposures to landfill contaminants. The research participant also will have the opportunity to be involved in qualitative or quantitative analyses of data and the visualization and presentation of highly relevant information. The participant will gain an understanding of how scientific evidence is used to inform decision-making processes. The research participant will also collaborate with scientific staff in CPHEA, CESER, Region 10, Alaskan Tribes, and other stakeholders.

Through this research project, the participant will gain experience conducting virtual and in-person workshops, conducting literature reviews and screening, developing conceptual models, incorporating stakeholder feedback, and developing technical summaries of scientific priorities. The participant will further develop strong scientific writing skills evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as strong communication skills such as giving oral presentations at scientific conferences. The participant will develop knowledge of the EPA’s mission and awareness of the breadth of EPA’s programs.

Kittelson Intern Program – Invitation to Career Conversations Webinar

Firm Name
Firm Location

Description

Every fall, Kittelson & Associates, Inc. hosts a webinar to introduce students to the transportation profession. The webinar traditionally gives an overview of career paths in transportation and engineering/planning, opportunities to build an impactful career in both the private and public sectors, and the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the transportation industry today.

This year, we’ve decided to expand the webinar to a seven-part series. Each event in the series will be hosted by a different set of Kittelson team members and will consist of a short presentation followed by lots of time for Q&A. This way students can pick and choose the topics that interest them the most and benefit from more open discussion. Additionally, the new format gives us meaningful time to connect with students in the virtual environment.

Students interested in this series, can view this overview of dates and topics. We also welcome you to sign up for one or more sessions if you’re interested! We’d like your feedback as we continue to refine the ways we share information and engage with students.

Kittleson and Associates has offered internships to students from UNC-CH in past summers. We are preparing for a mix of virtual and in-person internships next summer depending on national and local health regulations.

Kittelson Career Conversations: https://www.kittelson.com/news-and-events/kittelson-career-conversations/

  • What do transportation planning and engineering projects look like on a day-to-day basis?
  • What are the biggest challenges requiring innovation from the transportation industry today?
  • What kinds of career paths exist within the transportation profession, and how can I know which path is for me?

Join Kittelson & Associates for a series of virtual conversations to learn about many aspects of a career in transportation!

15 Kittelson staff members have marked our calendars for seven sessions where we’ll share what it looks like to work the transportation profession in general, and at Kittelson specifically. While this series is designed with students in mind, these events are open to anyone interested in learning more about careers in the world of transportation—from planning and engineering to finances and marketing.

These hour-long sessions will be built more around your questions than our content, so in each session, we’ll give a short presentation followed by plenty of time for you to submit questions for the presenters.
