Job Description:
To create learning opportunities for an intern interested in a career as a City Planner.

Examples of Duties:
Collect data, conduct research on zoning-related tasks, perform document inventory, and provide technical and administrative support for the Department.

-Conduct reviews, with the guidance of staff, of rezoning applications and new development in the City.
-Attend City Council, Planning and Zoning Board, and other meetings.
-Assist staff with the newly adopted UDO and implementation of the Maple Avenue Corridor Plan.
-Prepare agendas and other materials for presentations.
-Provide excellent customer service both in and out of the office setting.
-Perform records inventory and scanning, data collection, database development, and document editing.
-Support staff with general office administration.

Qualifications:
Must be able to comply with instructions, meet deadlines, and be timely; contribute technical knowledge and creativity to department staff. Excellent organizational and communication skills are necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Adobe, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and website content development is desired. This position will occur in an office/indoor setting with occasional outdoor fieldwork. Appropriate business casual dress will be expected during working hours.

Projects to Match Your Unique Skills and Career Goals
Working under the guidance of a host supervisor and EDF engagement manager, fellows uncover strategic energy management and climate solutions for their host organization. Projects culminate in a written report and series of recommendations to the host organization. Projects may focus on:

• Scaling Energy Efficiency: Identify energy and cost-saving measures, evaluate financing options and explore opportunities to implement advanced energy management technologies across a portfolio of buildings.
• Creating Commitments: Develop GHG targets that are based in science and create strategies to achieve emission reduction goals through data-driven analysis such as energy benchmarking and carbon accounting.
• Accelerating Renewables & Electrification: Uncover opportunities for renewable energy generation, create strategies for increasing resiliency through microgrids and recommend tactics to increase the adoption of electric vehicles.
• Evaluating Supply Chain Sustainability: Quantify and baseline scope 3 emissions and develop recommendations for engaging suppliers on energy related emission reduction opportunities.

Required Qualifications
• Current or recent graduate student studying engineering, business, sustainability, environmental management, public policy or relevant degree
• 2 years of applicable work experience
• Self-starter with strong project management and leadership experience
• Superior oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills
• Completion of graduate-level finance coursework by the summer of 2020
• A passion for solving environmental challenges
• Eligibility to work in the United States during the summer of 2020

Desired Qualifications
• Strong financial and quantitative skills, including project valuation
• Demonstrated experience working on energy efficiency, clean energy or sustainability projects
• Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative data analysis
• Understanding of greenhouse gas emissions accounting and reporting frameworks (e.g., CDP, GHG Protocol, The Climate Registry)
All selected EDF Climate Corps fellows will attend a week-long training in May 2020.

Compensation
$1,250 per week and reimbursement of travel costs to the training and EDF Climate Corps Summit, an annual fall conference.

This position will coordinate the research, implementation, and evaluation of strategies that are designed to create the sustainable conditions by which all Chatham County residents can lead active, healthy lives. Specifically, the position will oversee strategies and best practices that promote active transportation, inclusive healthy places and institutions, and improved nutrition and physical activity throughout the county. Current interventions include, but are not limited to: Healthy Hospitals, Community Conversations, Worksite Wellness, Exercise is Medicine, GO NAPSACC, and Built Environment/Community Design Planning.

Candidates should expect to get hands-on experience assisting with the implementation of a creative placemaking program, the Downtown Durham Public Space Project, and developing the downtown’s strategic planning document to guide future creative placemaking efforts. They will also get to be the voice and the eyes of the organization by assisting with writing about and photographing events and happenings around downtown. DDI is a small close-knit group and this individual will become an integral part of this team.

$1,500 for the 2019-20 School Calendar Year (the award will be distributed in two amounts of $750 each at the end of each semester of the 2019-2020 school year). It is the responsibility of the Fellowship recipient to maintain the course of study identified in their application and achieve a GPA of B or greater in both the semesters that the fellowship amounts are awarded. The recipient will also be required to summarize his or her project for publication in the ENRE Division’s newsletter. Additionally, the recipient will be encouraged to present his or her project at the ENRE Business Meeting during the APA National Planning Conference the following year (NPC 2021).

Performs planning projects and policy development. Position serves as project manager for development and land use applications. It requires the application of well-developed analytical skills in urban design, land use, code enforcement, and other subjects related to planning. Requires attendance at public meetings and hearings and work is performed under the supervision of the Planning Director.

The City of Durham Community Development Department is seeking a graduate-level candidate who will help to further the City’s goal of reducing experiences of homelessness in Durham. The Intern will collaborate with city staff to improve implementation of interventions for homeless individuals and to analyze needs for Durham’s homeless population. The work conducted will inform future policy, program, and funding priorities regarding interventions to address homelessness in Durham.

The Policy and Urban Design Division is seeking a motivated and organized self-starter to fill the role of Planning Intern. This position is responsible for working with Planning staff on plan development and community engagement tasks for the new Durham Comprehensive Plan. The successful candidates will focus on a variety of tasks that are graphic design oriented and/or data and mapping. Interns will receive oversight from planning professionals.

The primary duties of the Economic Development Coordinator are developing, directing, and administering the economic development functions for the County of Camden, North Carolina. The primary goal of this position is to develop and execute strategies to enhance the economic vitality of Camden County and to implement and oversee programs and initiatives established by the County Manager and the Board of Commissioners that will attract new businesses, retain existing business, strengthen the commercial corridors and Commerce Park, and support growth and development of existing businesses to promote a stronger economic base and a diverse mix of business.
