We are seeking team oriented, energetic, curious, and dedicated candidates pursuing a Master’s degree (or higher) for a position as a
summer intern. The position is available for 10-12 weeks during the summer of 2020. Students graduating in Spring 2020 or recent graduates are preferred, but all are encouraged to apply.
The position will be based in our office in Boston, Massachusetts.

As a summer intern you will play a critical role in a variety of our active projects, conducting spatial and quantitative analyses as well as developing new methodologies and tools that can be implemented in our projects across the world. Candidates should be passionate about analytics and design, and have interdisciplinary research interests that include land use, transportation, infrastructure, environment, and development. Experience with quantitative analysis of demographic data and socio-economic indicators is also critical for successful candidates.

The Town of Swansboro is interested in hiring an intern to work through the summer of 2020 to assist in updating our Town Code of Ordinances and Unified Development Ordinance to coincide with the recently adopted Chapter 160D, a new chapter of the North Carolina General Statues. This change requires updates to all local government development regulations by January 1, 2021.

The position would run from May 18, 2020 through August 14, 2020 and would consist of a maximum of 20 hours per week at a rate of $15.00/hour. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe is desired. A motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and who
possesses good technical writing skills, the ability to research statutory requirements, and good organizational skills are a must. Some knowledge of basic planning principles is desired, but not
required.

The following are the job duties for each area of Transportation Engineering & Design Division:

Construction Field Inspections (CFI) Internship:

There are eight (8) full time Construction Inspection intern positions available in Summer 2020. The City will consider additional part time work Spring and Fall of 2020 if candidate is available full time for the summer.

Location: The office is located at 309 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN and the actual work sites will be located throughout the City.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm with the possibility of overtime during the week as well as on weekends, depending on the workload.

Primary Job Duties

– Assist in the construction inspection of roadways, bike paths and bridges
– Assist with documentation and monitoring of daily construction operations done by private contractors on City construction projects
– Additional duties may include organizing documents, scanning documents, preparing or working with spreadsheets, and other tasks as assigned.

Construction Field Inspection LAB Internship:
There are four (4) full time Construction Inspection LAB intern positions available in Summer 2020. The City will consider extending the position into the Fall of 2020 depending on job performance. Work conditions include laboratory with considerable field work.

Location: The engineering lab is located at 1901 East 26th Street, Minneapolis, MN.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm with the possibility of overtime during the week as well as on weekend, depending on the workload.

Primary Job Duties:

– Assist in testing various construction materials and soils in the lab and in the field.
– Keep records of tests conducted.
– Prepare reports with analysis and related written documentation as required.
– Record sub-grade evacuation and plot soil profiles for construction projects.
– Perform cleaning and maintenance duties in the lab as required.
– Assist in repairing, calibrating, and maintaining equipment.

Land Survey Internship:
There are five (5) full time land survey intern positions available in Summer 2020. The City will consider extending the position into the Fall of 2020, depending on job performance.

Location: The office is located at 309 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN and the actual work sites will be located throughout the City.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm with the possibility of overtime during the week as well as on weekends, depending on the workload.

Primary Job Duties:

– Have an active role in performing field work for topographic surveys, horizontal and vertical control, construction staking, easements and boundaries
– Operate survey equipment such as Total Station, data collector, survey levels and GPS equipment
– Perform survey and property boundary research
– Make precise surveying measurements
– Perform surveying calculations
– Maintain records related to work activities; prepare reports
– Assist Crew Chief in completion of assigned tasks

Street Engineering & Design Internship:
There is one (1) full time Street Engineering & Design intern position available for Summer 2020 to assist the design team responsible for engineering and designing of city street construction projects. The City will consider extending the position into Fall of 2020 for exceptional candidates.

Location: Work site is located at the City of Lakes Building, 309 Second Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN and may occasionally include field work.

Work Hours: Work days and hours are flexible but are limited to the days of Monday – Friday and within the hours of 7:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Primary Job Duties:
– Assist in collecting and reviewing existing project data
– Assist in developing and evaluating concept layouts
– Assist in preparing preliminary and detailed plans, and estimates
– Assist in other tasks as assigned.

The Department of Public Works designs, builds and maintains the City of Minneapolis’ infrastructure, which includes but is not limited to: streets and bridges, public buildings, City fleet of vehicles, storm and sanitary sewer system, drinking water treatment and distribution, parking, ramps and surface lots, traffic signals, signage and striping, solid waste and recycling, and more.

The Governor’s Entrepreneurship Council (“GEC”) has launched the North Carolina Entrepreneur Corps (link). This program is designed specifically to engage college students throughout the state in making NC government more entrepreneurial. Students will work together to solve key challenges identified by the NC Department of Information and Technology. Students may apply as teams or as individuals and will be grouped together to work remotely as entrepreneurship teams. Each team will be assigned both an entrepreneurial mentor from the GEC and a technical mentor from NCDIT. Over the semester (Feb-April 2020), students will go through the entrepreneurial process including idea generation, concept development, customer feedback, and creation of a final product. At the conclusion of the semester, the teams will present their projects and meet and take pictures with the Governor.
