The American Political Science Association’s data science internship program is an opportunity for
upper-level undergraduates, or for graduate students, to be fully immersed in APSA’s work to streamline
data analytics and to centralize data resources for the Association’s Research Department to enhance
research on the profession of political science.
Applicants should be curious and eager to learn about data science skills as they apply to political
science as a profession to intern at APSA. The internship will put individuals at the center of American
politics in Washington, D.C., of the political science discipline, and of APSA’s membership, and is a great
opportunity to enact positive change for members and the profession through supporting work for datadriven insights and evidence-based policies and decision-making for the profession. Over the next three
years, a central goal of the Association is to increase engagement with and support for a diverse
collection of members from a variety of backgrounds, areas of scholarly specialty and institution types.
Thus, strong candidates will have experience working with diverse populations, research experience
with or knowledge of diverse populations, and will provide evidence of being committed to furthering a
climate of inclusivity and collaboration.
Applicants located in Washington, D.C., or with the possibility of relocation to Washington, D.C.
temporarily, to work in APSA’s offices in DuPont Circle are highly desirable. Applicants with the ability to
start immediately or by November 1st are highly desirable, students should expect a commitment of at
least one semester, so a Winter-Spring semester start date (second or third week of January) or a
summer start date are also possible.

The Acquisitions Intern provides temporary support to Acquisitions, New Markets, and Risk Managers in the origination, underwriting, due diligence review and closings of transactions. The internship offers practical experience related to affordable housing and community development finance. Under close supervision of existing staff, the Acquisitions Intern will learn to analyze, evaluate, structure and formulate recommendations regarding investment in complex real estate investment transactions. The position will assist department staff with financial modeling, originations, due diligence review, and the preparation and presentation of investment reports. The position requires excellent financial analysis, written and verbal communication skills. The employment classification or this temporary position is non-exempt.

Education Requirement
Bachelor’s Degree in real estate, finance, business, city planning, economics or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and comparable work experience.

Work Experience
Minimum one academic year completed with concentrated coursework in real estate, finance, business, city planning, economics or equivalent one year of relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates must demonstrate advanced MS Excel modeling skills and proficiency with MS Word and cloud-based storage applications. Candidates need a basic knowledge of real estate development and financial modeling and demonstrate the ability to analyze and develop complex financial models. Candidates must be able to set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and work in team environment in a manner consistent with CAHEC’s Principles and Values.

Work Environment
This position is based out of CAHEC’s corporate office in Raleigh, NC. Certain objectives require working on-site at various locations, such as industry conferences and events at properties in CAHEC’s investment portfolio, and some professional training opportunities may require travel.

Each summer, interns:

Learn the principles of survey research and industry best practices from leading practitioners at NORC
Gain hands-on survey design and operations experience
Combine social science and statistical methods with the practical challenges of day-to-day project implementation

Build the teamwork and project management skills, with a focus on collaboration

In 2019, the intern group worked with the Social Data Collaboratory (SDC) on a project for the Gates Foundation to understand how text analysis can be applied to measure exposure and awareness to the Foundation’s core education topics. The goal of the 2019 project was to understand and practice the procedures and methods that are used in social media data collection, quality assessment, and analysis. In other years, group projects have focused on Web survey design, studying adaptive design methods, and developing an imputation model for an address-based sampling design.
