The City of Charlotte is offering a transportation planning internship in the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT). The intern will work with CDOT’s Planning and Design Division, assisting with the various plans, programs, projects, and studies required to meet these objectives.

The day-to-day work and philosophy of the division is reflected in the City’s Transportation Action Plan, Urban Street Design Guidelines, Charlotte BIKES and Charlotte WALKS plans, available for review on the City’s website.

Internship Program:
Self-Help/CRL offers a 10 week summer internship program that is designed to give students valuable experience in a professional setting while broadening their knowledge of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). Along with each specific intern project, the intern will participate in a series of brownbag lunches to learn more about Self-Help and the Community Development industry as a whole. Interns will also be given the opportunity to network with one another and other Self-Helpers through a variety of planned events.

Internship Description:
Self-Help is seeking a Development Intern to join our Real Estate Team’s project management group in Durham for the summer. The Development Intern will be responsible for supporting an Associate Project Manager in ongoing real estate development activities, research and other support tasks, and new project predevelopment efforts. This internship will be particularly well suited for a positive, motivated, and well-organized person with an interest (but not necessarily experience) in community real estate development.

Essential Responsibilities:
Project tasks the Development Intern may engage in, with specifics to be determined, include:
>>Support Associate Project Managers on predevelopment activities for projects in the early stages, potentially including projects in Asheville, Charlotte, Henderson, Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Salisbury. This could include researching land use regulations, assessing the impact of development policies, conducting market research, feasibility modeling, and due diligence.
>>Support development activities for projects already underway. This could include real estate feasibility analysis, high-level design development, community engagement, and other tasks.
>>Miscellaneous research activities on Self-Help’s real estate portfolio, tenant mix, or other items.
>>Other tasks to be determined together with the Development Intern to meet their individual interests/learning preferences.
>>Take advantage of opportunities to interact with and learn from real estate professionals on the team, either formally or informally, including project managers, construction managers, property management and leasing staff, and the sustainability director.

Credentials, Experience and Skills:
>>Graduate student, recent graduate, or at least in the third-year of an undergraduate degree program.
>>Demonstrated interest in community development—through classes, prior work experience, and/or extracurricular activities.
>>Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
>>Strong organizational skills.
>>An enthusiasm for learning—and a proficiency at distilling complex concepts in communication.
>>Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Physical Requirements:
Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 40 pounds.

Provides support to Park Planning within the Parks and Recreation Department. The planning intern will work in a team setting under the supervision of the Senior Parks Planner.

The intern will participate in system wide and park master plan development, and will assist with planning projects for parks, greenways and recreation facilities. Tasks include the development of planning and design documents, including site analysis, conceptual and final detailed designs, renderings, cost estimates and specifications.
Design documents may be provided through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats, along with team participation in project theming, schematic design and overall design
development. Interest and base knowledge of project documentation during all phases of design, such as; project graphics and exhibits, site grading, paving designs, walls, structures, site lighting, planting design, as well as layout of land uses for buildings and other facilities.

The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a GIS intern to conduct Phase I of an inventory and condition assessment of all parks, greenways, and recreation facilities.

The intern will assist the Parks and Recreation Department Staff to collect, document, and receive data to
achieve the following:
• Location name with GPS coordinates (longitude and latitude) for all amenities/facilities or buildings
• Type of amenity, dimensions of facility and square footage of buildings
• Document through research of records and interviews with Parks and Recreation Staff
o Date of facility construction (month and year)
o Repairs and renovations made over the lifetime of the facility
o Cost of construction and renovations
o Known problems
• Digital photographs that identify the conditions for each item included in the inventory
• Historic designation

Qualified candidates should:

* Have a BA/BS in a planning-related discipline (including urban or transportation planning, public policy, or geography).

* Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a masters’ level planning program.

* Possess a firm understanding of the basic principles of planning.

* Show interest in policy, strategic planning, community engagement, economic and community development, and the integration of transportation, land use, and urban design.

Tasks will include research, facilitation in the community, documentation, and more. Strong writing skills are a must, and graphic design/spatial analysis experience is a plus. You will get exposure to many different types of projects, with opportunity to explore your interests.

Compensation is competitive, and position has potential to extend beyond summer. Internship is minimum 20 hours per week, maximum 40 hours per week.
