Projects to Match Your Unique Skills and Career Goals
Working under the guidance of a host supervisor and EDF engagement manager, fellows uncover emissions reduction opportunities and develop climate solutions for their host organization. Projects culminate in a written report and series of recommendations to the host organization. Projects may focus on:
• Climate Commitments: Work on cross-cutting strategies to reduce emissions including Net Zero, Science Based Targets, greenhouse gas accounting, and municipal climate planning.
• Renewables and Energy Efficiency: Develop targeted strategies to implement on-site and off-site renewable energy and scale energy efficiency.
• Supply Chain Sustainability: Quantify and baseline Scope 3 emissions and develop recommendations to engage suppliers on sustainability efforts.
• Zero Emission Vehicles: Build roadmaps to electrify medium and heavy-duty fleets.
New for 2022:
• Food Waste Reduction: In partnership with ReFED, a limited number of fellows will work within companies to advance strategic food waste reduction initiatives and accelerate implementation of high-impact solutions.
Required Qualifications
• At the time of application, enrolled in a graduate certificate or degree program studying engineering, business, sustainability, environmental management, public policy or other relevant subjects.
• At least 2 years of work experience.
• Self-starter with project management and leadership experience, including demonstrated success aligning and collaborating across teams.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.

The Sustainable Transportation and Communities Division (STCD) is looking for a creative, analytical, and diplomatic Staff Air Pollution Specialist (SAPS) to join the Climate Investments Benefits Section (CIBS), which is responsible for providing policy and technical guidance to agencies administering transportation, energy, and research funding programs. This SAPS position will require a significant amount of initiative, knowledge, resilience, and leadership ability.

In this role, the SAPS will be responsible for providing STCD with in -depth transportation policy and funding expertise to address the unique challenges associated with advancing a more sustainable and equitable transportation system and climate-resilient communities. Using this expertise, the SAPS will be responsible for leading the agency’s collaborative effort on public joint meetings with the California Transportation Commission (CTC) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to develop and implement policies that jointly affect transportation, housing, and air quality/climate. The SAPS will also coordinate efforts with other California Air Resources Board (CARB) divisions and partners at the CTC and HCD on outreach to equity, climate, and air quality advocates and disadvantaged and low-income communities to develop joint meeting agendas and rosters of speakers. Coordination of the joint meetings requires a high degree of organization and diplomacy to ensure progress towards meeting California’s ambitious climate, equity, transportation, and housing affordability goals. The SAPS will also play a leading role in evaluating existing or emerging State transportation funding programs, such as the CTC’s Solutions for Congested Corridors Program, for opportunities to reduce emissions and vehicle miles traveled in a way that achieves a range of environmental, social, and economic co-benefits, particularly in the State’s disadvantaged and low-income communities.

In addition, the SAPS will be required to work closely with other SAPS in the branch and division to identify new initiatives, review deliverables for policy and scientific accuracy, manage contracts on efforts related to improving quantification methodologies, proactively build constructive relationships with program managers and staff within CARB and at other State agencies, resolve sensitive program issues with tact and diplomacy, represent CARB at forums and workshops, prepare and present comprehensive reports to CARB management, and represent the program in meetings with other divisions, the Executive Office, the Chair’s Office, the Board, CalEPA, other State agencies, the Governor’s Office, the Legislature, local governments, businesses, communities, and advocacy groups. To ensure Board-wide coordination and communication, the SAPS is expected to collaborate across divisions and be familiar with CARB’s major programs and actively work to connect project assignments to CARB’s broader objectives to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, criteria pollutants, and toxic air contaminants. Travel within California will be required.

General Overview
SUMC is looking for a Research Analyst to join the Los Angeles Office. SUMC is expanding its Los Angeles Office to serve a growing set of programs that include program evaluation and learning components. These capacity-building programs disseminate knowledge and resources throughout a rapidly-growing mobility ecosystem of public agencies, community-based organizations, Native American tribes, and private sector mobility providers.

Position Overview
The Research Analyst will work closely with the Strategic Lead for California and Western Programs and SUMC’s California and Chicago-based teams to support the organization’s growing capacity-building programs.
