You and the team are responsible for implementing and activating new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects from construction to revenue service, collaborating closely with each corridor project team and other internal departments.

You will focus specifically on BRT implementation and activation efforts for projects that are currently under-construction and/or operational, by (1) managing internal database for existing bus stops affected by BRT construction, and (2) assisting field operations staff with developing and communicating detours and temporary layovers during different stages of project implementation.

The Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Planner serves DPS students by collecting and analyzing spatial information to inform operational decision making, trip planning for students and families, and infrastructure improvements that benefit Durham’s school-aged population. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Inventory transportation facilities, identify facility gaps or conditions not suitable for independent youth mobility, and develop school facility improvements particularly related to pedestrian access, public transit connections, transportation safety, and bicycle parking.
  • Work as part of a team to document common walking/biking routes and transit access based on school community input, desktop review, and consultation with city, county, and state partners.
  • Create, disseminate, and update school travel maps.
  • Facilitate the collection of student travel data and analyze for trends, programming impacts, and prioritizing projects.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with school staff, students, and caregivers to promote project initiatives.

Administrative Coordination

  • Coordinate with local government partners.
  • May act as point of contact for consultants and part-time staff, including interns.
  • Monitor program budget and draft grant reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the job.

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in planning, engineering, or geography.

Knowledge and Abilities
The successful applicant will have a working knowledge of the principles of design for pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Must be able to collect, organize, and analyze quantitative data and spatial data. Familiarity with transportation planning and safety research is preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office and Google platforms.

  • Work with educators and curriculum & instruction staff to develop content (i.e., project-based learning) for in-school or after-school activity focused on the connections between bicycle and pedestrian safety, health, and environment.

  • Act as an advisor and resource for students and family trip planning for active school travel.

Communication

  • Work with the DPS Exceptional Children department to facilitate the adaptation of programs and activities as needed to ensure that all students can participate.
  • Create and maintain content for webpages, presentations, and social media.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with school staff, students, and caregivers to promote project initiatives.

Evaluation – Data Collection and Presentation

  • Initiate the collection of parent survey data at the school and/or district level.
  • Proactively collect and communicate qualitative data.

Administrative Coordination

  • Coordinate with community partners on grant-related activities, including planning and outreach related to bi-annual walk, bike, and roll to school events.
  • May act as point of contact for consultants and part-time staff, including interns.

Education and Experience
High school diploma and at least three years of professional experience working with students, schools, or community groups. Experience with planning, youth engagement, or teaching is preferred.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of school systems, transportation planning, and group facilitation strategies preferred. The successful applicant will have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google platforms. They will have the ability to plan and execute community and youth engagement activities while maintaining a high degree of professionalism. Must be able to plan and coordinate multiple ongoing projects.

About our Opportunity
We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time Transit Planning and Projects Coordinator in the Transportation Department within the Transit Planning Division. The purpose of this position is to perform active planning, project coordination, data management and analysis, community engagement, grant administration support, federal regulatory compliance, and general support activities of the Transit Planning Division. The Transit Planning and Projects Coordinator will provide direct support to the Transit Planning Manager for all projects related to transit planning and operations of the City’s transit system, Asheville Rides Transit (ART).
This position will be heavily involved in the implementation of the current Transit Master Plan, and will have the opportunity to help shape the future of transit in Asheville. Major projects that the Transit Planning and Projects Coordinator will facilitate include:
– Implementation of multi-year $1.0 million federal grant project focused on area-wide bus stop improvements.
– Maintaining and utilizing ART Intelligent Transit Systems (ITS) technology and Infrastructure
– Planning, design, and construction of a major expansion of the Downtown Transit Center.
– Short-term and long-term planning to locate and construct a new transit maintenance garage.
– Assisting with Transit Master Plan monitoring and evaluation of new service improvements, and preparing and implementing master plan recommendations as budget allows.
– Assisting with service planning efforts including short term planning, Comprehensive Operational Analysis, and long-term planning.

Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; total of 37.5 hours per week. Some weekend and evening work is required for public meetings and special projects. This position qualifies for Compensation Time. Hours worked beyond 37.5 hours per week, will be counted toward Compensation Time, which may be used as paid leave, up to a certain amount which is based on years of service. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Utilizing an array of transit software applications to perform various types of transit service analysis, including the evaluation and forecasting of service delivery, developing route alternatives, performing land use and demographic analysis to evaluate route alternatives or infrastructure improvements, designing and conducting rider surveys, preparing trend analysis, examining problems to develop strategies to address community needs.

Utilizing various transit data systems and software to communicate real-time transit data, digital signage messaging and alerts, text message alerts, and bus headsign messages.

Oversee and maintain Intelligent Transit System technology (ITS) & Infrastructure Database.

Manage ART ITS System and work with ITS vendors and Google Transit to ensure all General Transit Feed Specification – real time information is processed properly.
Run reports weekly to ensure ITS is working properly and validate and analyze data.
Communication and public engagement, including developing presentations and reports regarding key transit performance measures, service changes and improvements, and serving as a liaison to the Transit Committee and other Committees and Commissions as needed; lead and implement public engagement activities to obtain feedback from riders.
Representing the Transit Planning Division in the development review process. Review new development projects for impacts to the transit system, and make recommendations for improvements.
Supporting the Transit Planning Manager with operations contractor oversight by providing reports and data on schedule adherence, missed trips, completed revenue hours, etc.
Assist with the compilation and submission of required transit data to FTA for compliance purposes. Responsible for National Transit Database (NTD) and Transit Asset Management (TAM) reporting the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and NC Operating Statistics to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Provide operational statistics, working with administrative staff, the Transit Planning Manager, and the Director and facilitating the operational information for the NTD Base Report
Coordinating with ART Operations Staff to modify schedules and routes as needed.
Oversee Bus Stop Improvement Project.
Managing transit procurement projects. Creating bid documents. Use scopes of work to procure amenities and general services in collaboration with the City procurement division in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local policies and procedures.
Researching funding opportunities and assisting the Transportation Grants Coordinator with developing and managing grants.
Research and report on transit innovations and industry trends.
Work closely with other departments and with ART on various transit capital projects, including bus shelter installations and improvements, facility renovations, and rolling stock procurement.
Coordinate with other departments and ART regarding roadway closures and detours.
Perform website updates and assist in posting and sending rider alerts.
Serve as a staff liaison to the Transit Committee.
Supporting the Transit Planning Manager on projects as needed.
Supplemental Functions:
Performing other similar duties as required.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Transit Planning, or related field is required. One (1) to three (3) years of related work experience preferred, including GIS and/or analytical experience, is not required, but is preferred.
Over two (2) years of experience in project management, transit planning, or closely related field is preferred.
Experience with graphic design or ability to update maps and schedules with Adobe Design Suite is not required, but is preferred.
Familiarity/experience with following transit-related software programs, such as: Trillium, Remix, Swiftly, SPSS, etc. is not required, but is preferred.

The Planning Internship opportunity is open for qualified candidates, 30-40 hours/week, up to 12 months. The City telework policy allows remote work up to 60% time.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to be successful are:

Description

The Leadership Fellow Program is a two-year rotational program at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey open to students who are receiving a graduate degree between December 2023 and June 2024. Over the span of two years, Leadership Fellows have the opportunity to rotate through four different departments of their choice. Departments where Fellows frequently rotate include Aviation, Planning & Regional Development, Port, Sustainability, Tunnels Bridges & Terminals, Engineering, Finance, the PATH transit system, Agency airports (LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark), the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and more. While there’s no typical day for a Leadership Fellow, some examples of responsibilities include project management, community outreach, process improvement, research, assisting with facility operations, and leading other important initiatives that impact the New York and New Jersey region. The program is designed to build a strong foundation of business acumen, adaptability, and knowledge of The Port Authority as a whole. The breadth and depth of experiences within the program are critical in preparing Leadership Fellows to be future leaders within the Agency.

Leadership Fellows are full-time, permanent employees with a yearly salary and benefits. After successful completion of the program, Leadership Fellows are considered for key positions throughout the Port Authority. As of 2023, there are approximately 100 program alumni still working at the Agency.

The Research Triangle Foundation, the 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that serves as the steward and administrator of Research Triangle Park, is hiring a mid-level planner. This is a dynamic role that touches a full range of topics in planning, including economic development, transportation, land use, real estate development, sustainability, and housing. With RTP’s unique role and structure, this position will work closely and regularly coordinate with our local government and regional partners.

Founded in 1959, RTP is one of our nation’s oldest business parks, and, at 7,000 acres, is the largest business park in North America. Building on the success of our economic development mission for our first 60 years, we are in the midst of a wide-ranging, long-range planning process to position RTP for continued success for its next 60 years. This position will play a key role in supporting the finalization and implementation of this planning process.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for:

  • Collecting, managing, analyzing, and reporting on key economic development indicators related to RTP companies, economic activity, and economic impact
  • Collecting, managing, and organizing GIS data for Park assets, including creating and maintaining RTP maps
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of the annual budget for RTP’s special tax district
  • Scoping and managing capital projects, including greenway trail projects and transportation improvements in RTP
  • Developing, monitoring, and implementing a capital improvement plan and specific capital projects related to RTP’s three parks and recreation facilities
  • Procuring and managing consultants and contractors on the implementation of planning efforts and capital projects throughout RTP
  • Engaging with Park companies to identify and advance key strategic priorities
  • Supporting the Senior Director of Planning on long- and short-range planning efforts, including strategic initiatives internal and external to RTF

The hiring range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000, depending upon experience and qualifications. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
